A
Cabinet of Curiosities, the recently released Janes Addiction dvd from Rhino
received a Grammy nod. The 52nd annual Grammy awards take place on January 31,
2010 in Los Angeles and alt rockers Janes Addiction are looking to take home
something for the mantle. While 2009 may be remembered by rock fans as the year
the Zeppelin Tour failed to materialize (they always have the Led Zepplin box
set to console themselves with), it’s also the year that the original lineup of
Janes Addiction -Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery-
toured for the first time in 17 years.
In what could be a resurgence of alt-rock at the Grammy Awards, a recently
released Janes Addiction dvd from Rhino titled A Cabinet of Curiosities has
been nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Boxed or Special Limited
Edition Package. This may be the most fanfare around a Rhino collection since
2007’s massive Led Zepplin boxed set undertaking garnered considerable critical
and fan enthusiasm.
2009 has been one of the more unpredictable years for rock music fans. We’re
still in the midst of what seems to be a mania for reunions; perhaps as rockers
age, they need to top up their retirement funds and that’s enough for them to
put aside old animosities and hit the road (along with the prerequisite musical
rereleases), but the trend shows no sign of slowing down. The Police led the
charge last year and even the Bee Gees (minus one, of course) have speculated
about touring, causing a resulting spike in Bee Gees cd sales. Neil Young is on
the road, Nine Inch Nails toured for the final time. AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac and
the Eagles were all packing arenas in 2009. Led Zeppelin reunited briefly last
year and then Robert Plant kept us guessing for months this year before finally
quashing our hopes and continuing his solo tour instead, leaving classic rock
fans to continuing listening to their Led Zepplin box set in lieu of seeing the
British superstars performing live in concert.
In recognizing the janes
addiction dvd, along with the three accompanying CDs that form Rhino’s A
Cabinet of Curiosities Limited Edition Boxed Set, alternative rock acts are
making a return to the Grammy Awards after years of pop music domination. While
Janes Addiction CDs may never have sold in the massive numbers that Justin
Timberlake or older acts like Bee Gees cds continue to rack up, the band became
a symbol of the alt-rock scene and over the top lead singer Perry Farrell, with
his Lollapalooza music festival, became a rock icon. A Cabinet of Curiosities
chronicles the history of Janes Addiction, including demos, rare recordings,
live versions and 30 previously unreleased tracks. The Janes Addiction dvd
captures the group with candid home movies, all eight music videos from the
Ritual de lo Habitual and Nothing’s Shocking releases and three previously
unreleased live performances filmed in 1990 for MTV Italy in Milan.
About The Author: Julie Tranton
writes about pop culture and the music industry (everything from bee gees cds to Nine Inch Nails
videos). Julie was one of those rooting for a Janes Addiction reunion and she
gave Rhino’s A Cabinet of Curiosities DVD release from Janes Addiction two
thumbs up in her review of the deluxe edition boxed set. However, she still
lists Rhino’s led zepplin box
set as her all time favorite, citing the mini album replica format, high
quality printing and comprehensive track list as making the set an unbeatable
collector’s item.
