New Delhi: The senior BJP leader and former external affairs minister, Jaswant Singh, was expelled from the BJP after he was claimed for unnecessarily praising the Muslim League leader Mohammed Ali Jinnah. The decision soon came after the ‘Chintan Baithak’ of BJP, held at Shimla on Wednesday.
BJP just wasn’t able to stomach the praising of Jinnah in Singh’s book since the time the book launched. This fact is clear that Jaswant Singh was asked not to attend the Chintan Baithak held today, by BJP. Well, no senior party leader, who had a part played while foundation of the party, would be treated in a way like this.
The reactions coming after the decision were no strangers. Jaswant Singh was shocked after the decision taken. And to add to his miseries, he wasn’t notified by the BJP regarding the expulsion, the decision straight forwardly was announced in a press-conference.
“Thirty years of my political life with the BJP and (being expelled) on this note … saddened me and on the ground for writing a book, that saddened me even more, immensely more," an openly upset Jaswant Singh, told reporters.
Holding BJP leaders apart, no reaction from any body around, supported BJP. None but all the comments throughout from personalities were the contrary of the decision taken. Lord Meghnad Desai, noted economist and professor emeritus of the London School of Economics, hit out at BJP for expelling Jaswant Singh saying, “It is a very bad move by the BJP for it shows how intolerant the party has become”. He further added “Jaswant has written a fine book which needs analyzing, discussing and debating. He has raised very interesting questions. It's a pity that that the BJP has not read the book and has made a fool of itself”.
Also against the BJP went the former UP chief minister, Kalyan Singh, quoting, “BJP is now a party of no significance. Whoever joins or leaves it does not make much of a difference”.
On the other hand congress regarded the decision taken was like doing Singh a ‘poetic justice’. AICC general Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said, “We had rejected contents of the book. BJP has rejected the author himself”.
Reports suggested that the BJP’s prime leader Lal Krishna Advani sealed the fate of Singh with these words, “Expel Jaswant Singh from primary membership of the party”.
